Pastors & para church leaders united in ministry for the Greater Akron Area

October 2008

In the past few weeks, America has been introduced to Freddie Mac, Fannie Mae, and A.C.O.R.N. Before the recent economic crisis most of us thought Freddie and Fannie were two old people who lived in someone’s neighborhood. Before the recent presidential campaign, most of us thought an ACORN was a nut squirrels feed on in the woods. Now we know that all three of these new famous names share one thing in common; a crisis in America’s trust. Solomon’s admonition in Proverbs has never proven to be truer. Here it is, Proverbs 22:1 “A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold.” The recent scandals that have revealed the private immoral lives of famous politicians have graphically reminded us of the shame that follows deceit. Many of us felt a deep sense of sorrow for the spouses and children of these powerful people as they stood by their side, listening to them confess their misdeeds.

Recently I was teaching from the Book of Joshua and was reminded of the tragedy of Achan’s life, and how it ended. The tragic ending of Achan’s life is recorded in the 7 th chapter of Joshua where he and his entire family were murdered for his disobedience. Because Achan hid forbidden property taken from the spoils of Jericho in his tent, his entire family paid an awful price.

I want to use this message to remind all of us of things we know, but occasionally need to be reminded of:

Serving in spiritual leadership is a trust given by God and affirmed by others. Therefore it is imperative that we do not betray our God and those who look to us for spiritual guidance and covering.

  1. Serving in spiritual leadership often brings great rewards, but with it also comes greater accountability. Jesus said it this way, “To whom much is given, much is expected.”

  2. It may take a lifetime to gain respect from our colleagues and followers, but only one misguided deed to lose their trust forever.

  3. Our reputation is what people say about us, but our character is what God knows about us.

  4. Remember Proverbs 16:18: Pride goes before destruction and a haughty spirit before a fall.

  5. Remember, when you think you stand, take heed, lest you fall. Someone wise said those words.

  6. Last but certainly not least, live your life so that those you love the most will always be proud to share your name.

I have often stated that the Church and the secular world do not lack for talented leaders, but there is a desperate need for more leaders of great integrity. I am so proud to be associated with so many Godly and talented spiritual leaders in the Greater Akron area. It is my prayer that we will never shame the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. We all want to hear his words, “Well done, good and faithful servant; enter in.” Amen!

I am your brother,
